The Newhouse School, renowned for its training in communications, prepares students for the fast-evolving media industry, offering them hands-on learning in state-of-the-art teleproduction facilities. Syracuse University’s Newhouse School operates a teleproduction facility that includes five studios, three production control rooms, and a centralized equipment room. The central equipment room has 40 sources serving 50 control room clients. This facility is connected by fiber optic cabling to six athletic venues.
Because the existing equipment was difficult to manage and hampered production efficiency, the university needed a robust replacement KVM system that would offer ease of configuration and high reliability.
To address these objectives, the original KVM system was replaced with a custom-configured Black Box system. This was a targeted replacement of existing technology rather than part of a larger initiative.
The current configuration includes Black Box® Emerald® IP KVM transmitters and receivers and Boxilla® KVM Manager. The new solution supports both academic and athletic broadcasting operations, including broadcast journalism, television, radio, and film academic programs, as well as sports production and over 100 athletic broadcasts for ACC Network and ESPN platforms. The modular setup enables quick reconfiguration based on show requirements, enhancing flexibility for varied programming demands.
The new KVM system met the university’s primary needs, offering ease of configuration and stable reliability. The Black Box solution has significantly improved operational consistency, allowing the facility to maintain uninterrupted production schedules with increased dependability.
As a bonus, the customer was pleased that the Emerald KVM system exceeded expectations, providing a straightforward user experience. The most appreciated feature of the new KVM system is that it “just works.” The system has had a positive impact on daily operations.
